ALONG VIA ANNIA
The landscape of the great reclamations
The most classical road to reach Terre di Grassaga follows, more or less, the via Annia layout, the ancient Roman road that 2000 years ago conduced from Adria to Aquileia.
You slip inside a big valley, populated by orchards, poplars, willows, locust trees and corn’s expanses. This is the land domesticated from the human work and talent, and for centuries made marshy from the meeting of the sweet water of rivers with the salty water of Alto Adriatico sea. It is the landscape of the great reclamations, with its “idrovore” (water pomps) symbols of this great work of improvement that stand in the countries like arch of triumph. Still today the old ones who live in this area near the ancient road, point at the places where the water of the sea arrived, to remember that the enterprise has been long, that it finished only in the last century and now are 50000 the hectares of new land emerged in low Piave area: a full expanse of the country good fruits.
The meeting with Piave River
Today, that ancient layout is still crossed with Piave river near San Donà, Noventa and Musile: it is the meeting with the Great War river that years ago served as bank to the Austrian soldiers and it marked the ransom of Italian army.
It is also the last line of the long path of Fiume Rosso (Red River, so named because of the blood that was spilled during the Battle of Solstice). The river flows from the peaks of Dolomiti, inside the valleys and the hills of High-Marca, up to reach the quiet valley veneto-padana. The lands that flank it are fertile, particularly appropriate for cultivation of grapevine and production of superb red and white wines. From the Grassaga Lands, looking toward San Donà, it is possible to see the river bank.
