IN THE GRASSAGA
“ISLAND”
The suburb without borders
The houses of Grassaga are located in the north of San Donà di Piave: a small rural suburb, always devoted to the country job.
It takes the name from the flanked channel, the Grassaga, a little ancient river, crossed by via Annia in the neighbourhood of Cittanova (there are still traces of the bridge that crossed it). It was administered, from 1500 to 1700, from St. Agostino regular Canonical monks who made possible with other congregations the first works of reclamation. This is a suburb without borders, a point in the valley opened to all the directions, where to run cross the wind, among the perfumes of wine and water that arrive from Piave and sometimes from the sea.
THE ESTATE,
TERRE di GRASSAGA
Just before to arrive at the suburb, on the right side is extended the agricultural estate Terre di Grassaga. The big farmstead is beautiful and represent the stately reclamations architecture in coherence with that of idrovores.
Sandra Zago bought it in 2002 and she is restoring it for ten years with intelligence and lovely attentions, recovering the signs of a long and fascinated history. The entry is refine with a pergola of grapevine; crossed the threshold there is the ancient tastes kitchen, the table is made of thick wood chapped by the history, the floor follows the draw of the stones and after all, imposing as an apse, appears the “fogher” (fireplace) with all its beauty: all around it met again the whole family, grandparents, parents, kids and child and many histories were told and they got warm waiting for a dish of “polenta” (corn mush). In the adjacent spaces, there is today the wide wine cellar, result of the most advanced wine-making solutions and of the industry precautions for the best maturation of the noble firm’s wine. Near the big house takes place the old stall and the old barn, where the silkworms were raised and where the wheat was preserved; to enter in, it is possible walk along a panoramic terrace that shortly will become a pleasant and relaxing location. Behind the building, the rows of grapevines are stretched…
